OshSU Clinic Performs Complex Heart Surgery on a Newborn
A one-day-old baby born with a congenital heart defect has successfully undergone a complex heart procedure at the Medical Clinic of Osh State University. The infant is currently in satisfactory condition.
Doctors diagnosed the newborn with a severe congenital heart defect immediately after birth. An urgent intervention was required to save the baby's life. Following a consultation, specialists decided to perform the Rashkind procedure, also known as balloon atrial septostomy.
The operation was carried out by a team of specialists led by Zaibek Syrgaev, an endovascular surgeon at the clinic.
“The Rashkind procedure is a minimally invasive intervention used to treat certain severe congenital heart defects. Instead of open surgery, a special catheter is inserted through the femoral or umbilical vein and guided to the heart. A small balloon at the tip of the catheter enlarges the opening between the right and left atria, improving blood circulation and increasing the body's oxygen supply,” said Zaibek Syrgaev.
The same procedure was also successfully performed on a 10-month-old infant weighing only five kilograms and on a two-month-old baby.
According to specialists, such operations are rarely performed in southern Kyrgyzstan. Osh State University Medical Clinic began performing these advanced cardiac procedures in February this year. The goal is to expand access to modern cardiovascular treatment and provide high-quality medical care for children in the southern region.
