Today, OshSU is hosting an Interuniversity Student Olympiad in honor of International Translators' Day.
Taasilkan Jumabaeva, the vice-rector for distance education at OshSU, gave the event's opening remarks. “The main act of patriotism performed by translators is to use the language they are learning to actively participate in the political and economic growth of our country. In addition, you need to improve the status and repute of the state language, translate important political, cultural, and literary content, and disseminate it to people who don't know other languages”-, she said.
The Olympiad is being attended by 49 students from Osh State University as well as representatives from Kyrgyzstan International University, Jalal-Abad International University, Osh Technological University, Kyrgyz-Uzbek International University, Osh State Humanitarian and Pedagogical University, and Kyzyl-Kiya Humanitarian and Pedagogical Institute of BatSU.
Students translate the information provided in the video materials and the written texts in the first round. Higher-scoring participants will translate through listening in the second round and interpret simultaneously in the third round.
The winners will get diplomas and the title “The Best Translator”. They can also become members of the Association of Translators.
The Department of American and Translation Studies of the Faculty of World Languages and Cultures hosts the Interuniversity Olympiad each year.
