What's Happening in the World: The Nobel Prize in Medicine
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded for research in the field of immunity.
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology has been awarded to Mary Branco, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for their work on the immune system, the Nobel Committee in Stockholm announced on Monday.
The prize was awarded for scientific discoveries in the field of peripheral immune tolerance, an area that explains the molecular and cellular mechanisms that play an important role in the prevention of autoimmune diseases.
Mary Branco (born 1961) is a research scientist at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, Washington.
Fred Ramsdell (born 1960) is a senior research scientist at Sonoma Biotherapeutics, a biotechnology company in San Francisco.
Shimon Sakaguchi (born 1951) is a research scientist at Osaka University in Japan.
The total prize money is 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 107,000 US dollars). The prize will be divided equally between the three winners.
