On November 28, Osh State University hosted a roundtable discussion on the research project “Ethnohistory, Traditions, Customs, and Culture of Kyrgyz Living Outside Kyrgyzstan (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, China, and Afghan Kyrgyz) Based on Exemplary Materials.”

During the meeting, project manager Turdumamat Kadyrov presented findings from a two-year study on Kyrgyz communities in Uzbekistan, while historian Oljobai Karatayev shared archival data on Kyrgyz in Tashkent. The participants agreed to continue collaborative research on Kyrgyz populations in neighboring countries and Uzbeks living in Kyrgyzstan.

The event was attended by Elzarbek Esharov, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation; Nurzhamal Kurbanbaeva, Head of the Department of Science and Innovation; university faculty and students; as well as scholars from Namangan, Andijan, and Fergana State Universities, and members of the Kyrgyz diaspora in Uzbekistan.

Notable attendees included Bekzat Abdumalik, a direct descendant of Abdyl Dabek, son of Alymbek Datka from Afghanistan, and Kaitmas Tashmanov, a prominent Kokand Khanate politician and descendant of Alymbekul Atalyk.

Launched in 2024, the “Kyrgyz Settlement Area in Uzbekistan” project initially received funding from Osh State University’s internal grants. Since 2025, it has been supported by the Ministry of Science, Higher Education, and Innovation of Kyrgyzstan, allowing the research to expand. Fieldwork has been conducted across several Uzbek regions, with hundreds of archival documents collected.

The project is nearing completion, with future research planned among Kyrgyz communities in China, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
