85-year-old Mamat Kulmatov is enrolled in the first year of the evening program at the OshSU Faculty of Medicine.

When we met with him, he said that he entered medical college in Aravan at the age of 76 and graduated at the age of 79. He earned the specialization of agronomist while attending the agricultural technical college in his adolescence. He has been actively engaged in the agricultural industry for many years and has been undertaking research to develop new seeds.

“I applied at OshSU in 1959 with the intention of majoring in biochemistry, but I left early owing to the life's difficulties at the time. It's never too late to learn, regardless of age. I'm also skilled in folk medicine”-, he added.

When we asked how his family felt about his decision to get an education Mamat Kulmatov answered that his family objected studying at this age. “But they were unaware of my innermost thoughts. I gave everyone my explanation. I made a promise to myself that I would become a doctor after my mother passed away from illness. My wife insisted that I should decide between science and family”-, " he said with a smile.

Together with his wife, Mamat Kulmatov brought up four daughters and one son; today, they have over twenty grandkids and great-grandchildren.

"I have been working as a teacher in this field for 27 years, and for the first time in my practice, I have a student in old age. On the one hand, I was happy to see Mamat Kulmatov, and on the other hand, I was impressed. We have only seen this kind of phenomenon abroad before, but I am very happy that it is coming to us"-, says Mahira Mirzayeva, who teaches the subject of organic chemistry.
