Under the umbrella of the USAID project “Cure Tuberculosis,” a comprehensive study was conducted in the country to gauge the public attitude towards individuals afflicted with tuberculosis. The results revealed that the most prevalent discrimination and pressure against TB patients were observed among the youth in the Osh and Batken regions. Consequently, an extensive two-year campaign has been underway to enlighten the younger population.
In a bid to intensify these efforts, a memorandum of cooperation between Osh State University and the Osh Regional Tuberculosis Control Center was signed on November 21st, aiming to combat the stigma associated with tuberculosis.
The event saw the participation of OshSU Rector Kudayberdi Kozhobekov, OshSU Vice-Rector for Public Relations and Youth Policy Nurzhamal Mapayeva, Head of the Osh Regional Tuberculosis Control Center Konushbek Sakmatov, and specialist in social behavior change from the USAID Tuberculosis Treatment project Anarbek Alimakhunov.
According to Nurzhamal Mapayeva, OshSU conducted training for volunteers from the Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Kyrgyz Philology and Journalism as part of this initiative. Sixty trained students engaged with their peers across other faculties, actively conducting informative sessions to dispel misconceptions about tuberculosis.
This collaborative effort outlined in the memorandum involves joint activities to organize events focused on combating and preventing tuberculosis among the youth.
