On December 19 in Bishkek, Hiroyuki Kawamoto, Director of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Representative Office in Kyrgyzstan, and Kudaiberdi Kozhobekov, Rector of Osh State University, formalized an interagency agreement to finance a project focused on improving air quality and safeguarding public health in Kyrgyzstan as part of the SATREPS initiative.

The agreement was also endorsed by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Control of Kyrgyzstan.

The SATREPS initiative marks Kyrgyzstan’s first major collaborative project with Japanese partners. It aims to enhance the country’s air quality monitoring system while investigating the adverse effects of air pollution on human health and the economy. The project also seeks to build capacity in terms of expertise, technical resources, and knowledge within the healthcare sector.

The initiative stems from long-standing cooperation among the Tokyo University of Science, Osh State University, JICA, and other key national and international stakeholders. A central component of the project is the establishment of the Inter-Institutional Center for the Study of Atmospheric Air Pollution (IRCAPS) at Osh State University. Funded by Japan, the center will focus on assessing the health impacts of polluted air. Additionally, the project includes the construction of a data center at OshSU and the development of a comprehensive information database.
