The history of Osh State University began in 1939 with the opening of the Osh Teachers' Institute. In 1951, it became a pedagogical institute, and in 1992, a university.
Currently, OshSU has 8 institutes, 4 faculties, 1 higher educational institution, one centre for postgraduate medical education, six secondary vocational colleges, four lyceums, more than 30 educational, methodological, cultural, aesthetic and resource centres, laboratories, ten student dormitories, two medical clinics, one primary education centre, one kindergarten, 18 sports complexes, 1 start-up centre.
The university has been awarded 4 stars in the QS Stars ranking, it is among the 260 best universities in Asia and among the 13 best universities in Central Asia in the QS Asia University Rankings 2025. Osh State University became the first university in Kyrgyzstan to be included in the QS World University Rankings subject ranking. Osh State University made its debut in this ranking, taking 301-350th place in the modern languages programme.
In the IAAR Eurasian University Rankings, Osh State University was recognised as the second best university in Eurasia in 2024. It has also been the most sought-after educational institution in Kyrgyzstan for six years in a row.
The number of foreign students has exceeded 10,000. Osh State University employs 41 citizens from about 10 countries, including the United States, Turkey, India, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, and China.
Osh State University became the first higher education institution in the country to switch to digital services. All processes, from admission to graduation, are carried out electronically. The MyEDU platform was developed to automate the learning process.
Over the past five years, Osh State University has built 12 buildings. There are plans to build a nine-storey student dormitory, indoor sports complexes, a veterinary laboratory, an underground car park with a sports ground on top, and a six-storey IT park.
Osh State University cooperates with 325 universities in 33 countries around the world in the areas of academic mobility, dual degree programmes, international projects, and scientific cooperation.
